Channeling Thor for a Poem on Thursday

Tors strid med jättarna by Mårten Eskil Winge (1872)

Paging Thor on Thursday.

I do not need a muse.

I’ll channel you directly, Lord.

I’ll leave no one confused.

We’ll talk about the planets, Lord

And how it’s marvelous they wander

And but to make us wonder,

What spell we might be under.

and if you don’t think that’s magic, then you don’t believe in magic. And if you don’t believe in magic that’s fine too, but understand you are behind those who do. Again, fine, but awareness is the essential first step to enlightenment.

I’m trying to be the dude who walks up to the guy in Plato’s Cave and not only says, “Hey, those are shadow puppets,” but I’m trying to take off the chains and force you to stand up and look around. There is way more than just the circus to this life. Some people live their entire lives in that circus. And that’s okay. They play an important role too. Everything does. But the truly blessed recognize the circus for a circus. And they stop eating bread too.

You might think it is strange that a ‘cross’ would depict scenes from Norse Mythology like Loki and Thor, but it’s not. Because you could see Jupiter in the night sky in Denmark. And you could see the Sun and ‘The Crux.’ And the Winter Solstice was just as important in those days to a largely agricultural society.

They raised sheep for wool, (Wool used to be all the rage until cotton) but they also had local crops that they grew and keeping up with the stars was the only calendar.

Then a different type of men conquered England. Normans, to be Frank. Well, the Normans pretended to be Frank, at least. They were Norsemen. Norman. Danes. Anyways.

Then they had to figure out something else to do after cotton displaced wool and the colonies started producing plenty at low cost, so they straightened all the rivers and ruined the environment. Now they are reintroducing beavers (which were removed because of the value of their fur alone) to an environment that hasn’t seen them in 100 years but it IS restoring some of the ecosystem that once existed. Eventually these areas would become deserts. This is what happened to the Sahara. You are told lies about how recently it was green. Study old maps! Then read old books, study archaeology in that region.

I saw last night a YouTube video or something about a discovery in the Sahara of grain processing stations. So this was once an agricultural society that grew and processed their own grain. Today, just open desert. There are patches, and you can dutifully restore desert to liveable habitat, but it costs money to do that, and these men are terrified to spend money on something where the payoff is so abstract.
